Trig-Birthery

The most popular story on the Guardian's website this morning is Megan Carpentier's perspective on the conspiracy theories surrounding former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's youngest child.

(Megan is the ex-Washington, D.C. lobbyist who once wrote pseudonymously for the political blog Wonkette. Then she contributed her expert commentary as an editor at Jezebel before, during, and after the 2008 presidential elections.)

During the election campaigning there were in fact reports that Trig is Bristol's child and that her mother claimed him for public relations.

To be honest, I haven't heard them much lately but the fuss about Barack Obama's place of birth is presumably reviving the old controversy, if only on the schoolground principle of tit for tat.

At any rate Megan points out that, aside from the problems of harping on such a theory instead of opposing Sarah Palin on mature and relevant grounds — her political principles and knowledge —, Bristol gave birth to her own baby eight months later.

"Shame on the Trig-truthers' Sarah Palin hate" [Guardian], by Megan Carpentier (April 26, 2011)
